Dr. Brittany L. Sutherland
I am a plant evolutionary and ecological geneticist who completed her PhD in the Galloway Lab at the University of Virginia and a postdoc in the Barker Lab at the University of Arizona. I'm currently the program manager and research scientist for the Consortium for Plant Invasion Genomics, a multi-lab and multi-state collaborative to explore invasive plants in the United States and to train the next generation of plant genomicists in states with smaller research infrastructures.
I am primarily interested in how large-scale genome changes--particularly whole genome duplications--affect the way plants interact with their environments and with each other.
Science isn't restricted to experts in closed labs. Everyone uses data every day to make decisions and understand their world. For that reason, I am passionate about teaching not only biological facts, but data literacy in a variety of contexts.
I am happy to discuss Campanula, Salvinia, Polyploidy, Invasion Biology, Bioinformatics, Pedagogy, and Cats. Feel free to check out my current research, CV, writing, or drop me a line!
